Welcome to Springvalley Middle's School Garden Project! We are now in our fifth year of production and we are undergoing a redesign. As we have become more aware of the issues facing the valley with water usage, learning about indigenous species, xeriscaping, and permaculture; we have begun to work closely with Kelowna's Permaculture society and in particular Lucy, to begin to transform our garden into a learning garden with the focus being on creating a garden designed with permaculture principles of sustainability, optimum food production and food sharing.
We are also committed to honoring that we are on Okanagan Territory and have been working hard to include and incorporate the Okanagan language and culture in our Garden's structure. We have consulted with Grouse and Pamela Barns, as well as, Gail Smith, who are Traditional Knowledge Keepers in the Okangan Traditional Territory. We were fortunate enough to have Grouse come in and work with our staff and students, teaching us about the traditional uses of many of the indigenous species in the area. In the fall of 2017, the Gardening Club Students were able to go to Okagan College and have a tour of their Tradional Garden and learn further about incorporating traditional plants into our garden here at the school.
